Kev and I have officially lost the plot and signed up for the Mystery Box Rally 2026.
The premise is simple: we get a car that is at least 25 years old—roughly the same vintage as our back pain—and drive it out of Charleville for 5 days of mystery outback bashing, eventually looping back to where we started. We won’t know the route until each morning, which is fine, because we usually don’t know where we are anyway.
Here is the problem: Between the two of us, our mechanical knowledge is dangerously close to zero. Kev thinks a "differential" is a math problem, and I’m pretty sure the "carburettor" is a type of pasta. Our entire repair strategy relies on three things: cable ties, duct tape, and staring at the engine with our hands on our hips waiting for it to fix itself.
What could go wrong? Literally everything.
But that’s the spirit of the adventure. We are fully prepared to break down in the middle of nowhere, laugh about our incompetence, and hopefully limp our way to the next outback pub.
Jokes aside, we are doing this to raise serious funds for the Cancer Council. We’re taking on the dust, the heat, and the inevitable mechanical disasters to help fight cancer. Please donate to the cause—if not for the research, then at least out of pity for two mechanical numnuts trying to keep a 25-year-old heap of junk alive in the desert.
See you in Charleville (or on the back of a tow truck).
Every participating team is required to raise a minimum of $4,000. Every dollar raised goes directly to Cancer Council and helps fund vital cancer research, which is why we’re doing everything we can to hit our goal. Your support, whether big or small, will have a real impact.
Mystery Box Rally is a 5-day challenge like no other. Participants drive 25+ year old cars along a mystery route, through some of Australia’s most stunning (and often rugged) landscapes, all in support of cancer research. It’s not a race—it’s a challenge and more importantly, a celebration of the power of community.
Yes, the cars break down, and yes, there are plenty of unexpected twists along the way, but that’s all part of the fun. The rally is designed to be a colourful and unpredictable experience, where teams travel in small groups, helping each other along the way. And when the day’s drive ends, we gather around the campfire, share stories, and reflect on the day’s achievements.
This event brings together people who have been impacted by cancer in different ways—whether it's through their own battles or through loved ones. Together we’ll make memories that last a lifetime while supporting the fight against cancer.
Founded in 2009, Box Rallies has raised well over $50 million for cancer research with our chosen beneficiary being Cancer Council.
We are proud to be the funder of national cancer research projects after the Australian Government. These enormous funds raised go towards vital cancer research projects.
Thanks to the community funds raised such as Mystery Box Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.
