Our Story …

We're thrilled to announce that we're taking part in Mystery Box Rally 2026! This rally will have us driving a car that is 25 years or older along outback roads. We set off from Charleville, QLD & return to Charleville 5 days later, each day in between is a mystery, we have no idea where we will be headed until just before departure the next morning. It’s not just about the drive—it’s about making a real difference in the fight against cancer.

Every participating team is required to raise a minimum of $4,000. Every dollar raised goes directly to Cancer Council and helps fund vital cancer research. Your support, whether big or small, will have a real impact.

Team Kanga Banga was born on Kangaroo Road, where Bashar and Daniel met as neighbours during the COVID lockdowns. What started as front yard catch-ups with the “Kanga crew” quickly turned into lasting friendships — and now a new adventure, on wheels.

Both share a deep passion for travel, camping, cars and exploring the road less travelled. Bashar’s love for overland journeys began with a three-month motorbike trip around Australia, while Daniel’s travel bug took him road tripping across Europe and on safari through Southern Africa.

Like so many Australians, cancer has touched both their lives — Bashar through the loss of his mother-in-law Yvonne in 2019, and Daniel through his cousins, Matthew and Kelly. Joining the Mystery Box Rally is their way of honouring those memories while supporting Cancer Council’s vital research.Adventure, purpose, and a few dusty roads ahead — that’s Team Kanga Banga. 🦘💛

Here's what I'm doing …

Mystery Box Rally is a 5-day challenge like no other. Participants drive 25+ year old cars along a mystery route, through some of Australia’s most stunning (and often rugged) landscapes, all in support of cancer research. It’s not a race—it’s a challenge and more importantly, a celebration of the power of community.

Yes, the cars break down, and yes, there are plenty of unexpected twists along the way, but that’s all part of the fun. The rally is designed to be a colourful and unpredictable experience, where teams travel in small groups, helping each other along the way. And when the day’s drive ends, we gather around the campfire, share stories, and reflect on the day’s achievements.

This event brings together people who have been impacted by cancer in different ways—whether it's through their own battles or through loved ones. Together we’ll make memories that last a lifetime while supporting the fight against cancer.

Rally Update – We’ve got a car!

Big update from us – after a lot of searching, we’ve finally found a car that feels perfect for this adventure: a 1989 Saab 900. A true classic and very much in the spirit of the Mystery Box Rally! The Saab definitely needs some love, so we’re now deep in the process of getting it rally-ready. There are a few repairs and upgrades on the list, and we’re trying to do as much of the work ourselves as possible to keep things budget-friendly (and because half the fun is learning along the way).

We just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who has already donated and supported us. The encouragement and generosity so far has been incredible and genuinely means a lot to both of us.

Over the next little while, we’ll also be working on some fundraiser ideas and starting to reach out to a few local businesses for sponsorship, so stay tuned for more updates.

Thanks again for being part of the journey with us – we couldn’t do this without you!

Dan & Bashar

Route & Planning Update!

We’re now in the early stages of planning our route, and it’s looking like we’ll be covering around 5,500kms in total, heading all the way up to Queensland and back as part of the rally.

That’s a serious distance, especially in a classic car, so right now our main focus is on building the Saab to be as reliable as possible. The planning phase is all about reducing risk, thinking through contingencies, and making sure we’re setting ourselves up to actually finish the rally (and hopefully enjoy it along the way!).

There’s still plenty to figure out, but it’s exciting to see the journey starting to take shape.

One thing’s for sure — it’s going to be a big adventure. Thanks for all your support!
